High Definition Channels

High definition channels are available through most cable and satellite service providers. When you open an account, be sure you ask about the high definition channels if you have an HDTV. Your high definition television will not offer you much if you don’t have an HD channel package with your service provider.

Do the research and make sure you pick the best option for you. Some service providers have HD DVR, some offer only a few HD channels, so be sure you know what you are paying for before you make the choice.  

When you buy a new HDTV and you want to upgrade your existing cable or satellite account, you may also get a free upgrade or a rebate on the upgrade. Some service providers offer hundreds of options and combinations for high definition channel packages. You can also get turbo HD packages. There is an additional fee with these packages and that fee can range from $10.00 to $25.00.  

Keep in mind that not every channel broadcasts in high definition. Depending on the broadcast, the quality of the resolution and broadcast signal will vary from one channel to another.

The quality of a high definition channel broadcast or recording is dependent on resolution. The image resolution is measured by the number of lines or pixels in an image. The more pixels or lines, the better the resolution. The finer resolution images give you more of a real time, real life feel.  

If you get up close to an old style TV you can actually see the spaces between the lines or dots that make up the image. Compare standard resolution, comprised of 480 scan lines to the 1080 scan lines in a high resolution image and you can see why the viewing experience is improved by HDTV technology.
