High Definition Radio

High Definition Radio? What does that mean? If you are a fan of HDTV, you know that high definition in television means better resolution and a clearer picture. So, what could we possibly get from high definition radio?

Very simply put, high definition radio does offer better audio resolution so it truly is high definition. HD radio is transmitted along with the standard analog audio signal over the same broadcast signal or channel. New FM channels can also offer this digital content.

There is no charge for HD radio. Unlike subscription radio signals that require a box and subscription fee to listen to special interest music or news channels, HD radio is free for the listening.

However, if you want to leverage HD radio and hear the better resolution, you do need to buy a receiver that is specially designed to receive the digital signal. If you do not have this kind of receiver you may not know that more than eighty percent of U.S. radio stations are already broadcasting HD radio.

HD radio is also called IBOC or in-band, on-channel technology. Today, there are more choices or HD radio receivers. Like HDTV tuners and receivers, the high definition radio system market has grown exponentially.

You can spend as little as $40 for a laptop HD radio receiver that plugs into your computer port much like a flash drive. You can spend $100 on an HD radio receiver and as much as much as $250.00 for a full sized table top HD radio receiver.

If you do not think you can tell the difference between standard analog radio broadcasts and high definition radio or high definition channels, you can visit a listening room at your local electronic chain store. Once you hear the difference, you may want to invest in the receiver. If you love music, the HD technology will allow you to enjoy your music even more.
